Maybe you share your bedroom with your little sister. Or you
have a room all to yourself. Maybe you live in a dorm and have a
roommate. But no matter the size, your bedroom should be a
haven and a retreat. It should also be a place that creatively
represents you.
To give your bedroom (or dorm room) a makeover, all it takes is
a little time, color and creativity! (OK, it might take a little bit of
money, too, but these ideas are especially tailored for those with
a small budget!) Check out the general tips for spicing up a
bedroom and, if you’re feeling brave, try some of the decorating
ideas.
General Tips
1. Pick a theme. Your theme might be a color scheme
(a pink-and-green-colored bedroom), a certain style (modern or
country) or a repeated shape or design (flowers, surfboards or
polka dots).
2. Stick to your colors. Your room will look more
pulled together if you maintain a consistent color scheme.
Choose three main colors and use them throughout your
room.
3. Stay organized. Organization is essential to make
your bedroom the haven you want it to be. Make sure everything
in your room has a place. After you use something, be faithful to
put it away!
Delightful Decorating Ideas
1. Change the knobs. You can update a plain dresser
or desk with little expense by buying colorful knobs, or try
painting your existing ones. You could even glue a rhinestone in
the center for a bit of flair!
2. Hang some flowers. Add a touch of nature by
attaching fake flowers to fishing line. Cut the fishing line so that
it’s long enough to hang from your ceiling. Then, attach the
flowers to the fishing line every 6 to 12 inches. The flowers can
be tied on using additional fishing line. Try making three strands
and hanging them in a corner, spacing the flowers differently on
each strand. Hang the strands from the ceiling with a tack.
3. Think 3-D. You can make 3-D wall hangings out of
narrow-width boxes. Cereal boxes are a good size for this.
Cover the boxes in colorful paper (such as wrapping paper) or
try spray-painting them. Then decorate the face of the box by
gluing on magazine cutouts or finding cool computer graphics.
Add a quote or a Bible verse by finding your favorite computer
font and printing it. Hang the boxes in sets of three with a small
nail or a tack.
4. Dress up your picture frames. To make cool picture
frames, try gluing ribbons on them vertically and horizontally.
You can use a few thin ribbons on one frame and a thick ribbon
on another.
5. Make a “boa board.” A fun way to enhance an
ordinary bulletin board is to glue a feathery boa around the
edges. This adds style and texture!
6. Pin up your pics. Clothespins are great for holding
photos. First, paint or spray paint seven or eight clothespins.
Then clip them to a colorful ribbon and pin your pictures. You
can string the ribbon horizontally or hang it vertically.
7. Spray-paint baskets. Baskets can be used for lots of
things, such as storage on a bookshelf or holding your
Brio mags. You can find baskets at nearly every resale
store for way cheap! Try picking four or five baskets in different
shapes and sizes and buy a can of colorful spray paint. (Spray
paint comes in every imaginable color!) Use newspaper to cover
the ground when you spray paint, and always do it in a well-
ventilated room or outside. The colored baskets will add a nice
touch when put in different places in your bedroom.
8. Add a little light. White Christmas lights can be
used year-round in your bedroom. They’re especially unique
when wrapped in tulle, a net-like material that can be purchased
at craft stores. Wrap the tulle loosely around the lights and hang
them around your ceiling. The tulle will soften the lights and
create a nice effect. Add some color by putting fake flower
petals in the tulle.
9. Decorate your lampshades. There are many ways
you can creatively enhance your lampshades. Try decorating
with fake flowers, ribbon or even beads. Use a glue gun or
household cement to attach the decorations.
10. Hang a map, with a twist! A map can be a cool
addition to any bedroom, and it’s a great way to decorate an
empty wall. To spice it up a bit, try cutting the map in half
vertically and horizontally, giving you four squares. Mount each
quarter of the map on cardboard or frame it. Hang the four
pieces, making sure to space each piece so there’s about an
inch-and-a-half between them. (A map can also be a great
reminder to pray for the persecuted church around the world.
