Be Encouraged to Encourage

Since the beginning, Nevertheless’ goal as a band has been to be authentic. “One thing we try to do as we’re talking to bandstudents is to be on their level, to be interested in what they’re interested in and love people like we’re supposed to,” says lead vocalist, Josh Pearson.

But the members of Nevertheless aren’t the only people encouraging others. They’ve also experienced friends and family being Jesus’ hands and feet toward them. Keep reading to hear their stories.

Josh Pearson, lead vocal, guitar: When I was in youth group in high school, there was a guy who played guitar whom I really looked up to. He led the worship at church, and he also had a rock band. He may not even remember this, but I remember at youth camp, I just started playing guitar, and he sat down and showed me a couple of songs. That was supercool to me, but he probably thought he was shooting the breeze. That was a pivotal moment for me. It encouraged me to keep playing guitar, and now I do it full time. That was an example of being the hands of Jesus and teaching someone younger something good.

AJ Cheek, lead guitar, background vocals: My grandmother has been the hands and feet of Jesus to me. When I was younger, she instilled faith in me, and she’d always talk to me. I actually lived with her for a year.

Adam Wann, bass: When I was growing up, in about middle school, my family didn’t go to church all the time. They went maybe occasionally. But I had people in the youth group who would go out of their way [to include me]. One guy named Ron would pick me up and make sure I would make it if I wanted to go.

Adam Rowe, drums: We’ve met so many people over the years. It’s hard to pick out one over the million we’ve talked to. But what keeps coming to my mind is one of the four of us has always been there [for each other]. There have been so many times when we’ve been broken and at the end of our rope. We know each other inside and out and try to be Christlike people [toward each other].

Brad Jones, guitar, background vocals: In elementary school is when I got saved. And then throughout middle school, I kind of drifted away. Probably my sophomore year in high school, I met this guy and his family. I started hanging out with them and almost living at their house. I was over there constantly. I grew up in a strong Christian family as well, but his family was really outgoing, and they were always involved in things. So through him, I got involved in their youth group, because the youth group at my church at the time wasn’t doing a lot. I didn’t feel as though I had a place there. So through them, they opened so many doors for me, and I plugged in, starting to play bass for their worship band. Through their help, they turned me around. And if it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t have met this band.
