God first. Most Christians would vow they believe it. But it isn’t enough just to say you mean it. Does your life show that you seriously have Jesus where He belongs? Take the quiz to find out.
1. Your favorite TV show is about to begin when you realize
you didn’t do devotions today. You
a. whisper a quick prayer, saying you’re sorry and promising you won’t miss your time with God again. Then you grab the remote.
b. settle down in the recliner for the best hour of the week. After all, God understands how busy you’ve been, and He’s really into forgiveness, isn’t He?
c. retreat to your room and whip out your Bible. It’s more important than anything on TV, and you can probably catch the last half of your show when you’ve finished.
2. Just when you’ve finally saved enough to buy that
long-awaited iPod, your church has a speaker from a Christian substance-abuse
program. You know God wants you to donate your savings to it. You
a. drop $10 into the offering plate. It won’t take that long to earn back the cash, and you can still get your iPod.
b. chalk up the urge to contribute to eating too much pizza last night. God wouldn’t want you to deny yourself that iPod after waiting for it so long.
c. cheerfully donate the entire amount to the program. You can save your money again, but those teens struggling to kick drug or alcohol addiction need help now.
3. You’ve committed to spend Saturday volunteering at
the homeless shelter. Then a casual friend you want to get to know better invites
you to spend the afternoon at the mall. You
a. accept the offer. You can work at the shelter in the morning and tell them something came up after lunch.
b. forget the shelter. They have plenty of volunteers. Besides, getting better acquainted with this friend could lead to opportunities to share your faith.
c. invite the friend to accompany you to the shelter. Together, you could do twice as much! If she’s not interested, suggest a rain check for the mall.
4. You really need a part-time job. Your friend who works at the video rental store practically guarantees he can get you hired. You
a. agree to fill out an application, if it’s OK with your parents. Before you turn it in, you ask about having Sundays off. Missing church isn’t an option.
b. hot-foot it down to the store. Maybe you can be working by the weekend.
c. thank your friend for his offer but refuse to commit until you’ve had time to pray about it. How tempting would it be for you to be constantly around DVDs that reek of violence, sex and profanity?
5. It’s the night of the big game, and you’ve been dying
to go. Then your mom unexpectedly has to work and needs you to baby-sit your
younger brothers. You
a. agree to it if you can take your siblings with you. It won’t be nearly as much fun as just you and your friends, but it’s better than missing the game.
b. absolutely refuse to help. You’ve waited too long for this to stay home now. Besides, Mom can probably find one of her friends to baby-sit.
c. can’t hide your disappointment but manage to smile a little and give up your plans. Your brothers really need to get to bed on time, and Mom wouldn’t feel comfortable with them at the game.
6. You forgot all about the major paper due tomorrow,
and tonight you promised to go to the county fair to hear your best friend’s
entry in the 4-H speech contest. When you tell her, she gives you the address
of a Web site where you can download a prewritten term paper. You
a. know God wouldn’t want you to cheat like that but just thank her without explaining it. You can go the speech contest, leave as soon as it’s over and work all night.
b. flip on the computer. Probably half the class won’t turn anything in, and most of the rest will have someone else do it for him or her. Besides, it’s important to support your friend.
c. begin work on the paper ASAP. You plan to rush home right afterward and finish it. It’ll be tough and not your best effort, but you did promise to be there. And you inform your friend why you can’t cheat.
Scoring
Mostly A’s—You try to put God first, but you’ve got some areas of compromise. Take a look at your life. Is your time really His? How about your money? Relationships? When you zero in on an area that could be surrendered more, ask for His help and think through your actions.
Mostly B’s—You may say God is No. 1, but it sounds more like lip service than the real thing. Ask your youth pastor, parent or other godly adult to help you pick one or two areas that need to be changed and get going. We’re talking hard work here, but with God’s help, you can do it.
Mostly C’s—You seem to have a pretty clear understanding of how to make your actions reflect your commitment to God. Keep striving for more of Jesus in every area of your life—physically, mentally and spiritually. And don’t let pride in your devotion seep in; that isn’t putting Him first.
