A Date With Your Sister

I can honestly say that my two best friends are my sisters, Charyl and Myra. Even though we’re now 24, 21 and 19, we still like to do fun things together, from window-shopping to performing ice skating routines on our Rollerblades! Sure, we’re good friends now, but it wasn’t always that way. It took prayer, forgiveness and a lot of quality time to build lasting friendships.

So, what are you waiting for? Here are 20 super-fun activities that will help you become better friends with your sister. And hey, if you don’t have a biological sister, grab a Brio Sis or another sister in Christ!

1. Bed and Breakfast
Have a slumber party just for your sister! If you both can’t fit into one bed, take your sleeping bags into one of your rooms. But don’t go to sleep right away! Talk about your day, tell each other your dreams or tell scary stories.

2. Dance Party
This is one of my favorites! Turn up your sister’s favorite CD, and make up crazy dances as you move to the music. For my sisters and me, this means doing the "Push Lawn Mower" dance to Plus One’s new release!

3. Pamper Parlor
Set aside a Saturday night to really clean up before Sunday morning church. Join your sister for a pedicure, manicure and facial while you watch a movie or listen to your favorite CD. Hey, maybe your sister will share her nail polish collection with you.

4. Fun Foods
Grab your sister and make your favorite snack! Whether you crave something salty or sweet, this is a tasty activity that both of you can enjoy. One Sunday afternoon my sisters and I ate an entire bowl of cookie dough. Yum!

5. Game Night
Play your favorite board game together. For my sisters and me, this involves trying to win the most dates with Zack and Slater in the "Saved by the Bell" board game.

6. Would You Rather?
This is a crazy game that you and your sister can play anywhere you go. By asking your sister a "would you rather" question, you’ll learn more about her and have fun at the same time. For example, would you rather have purple ears or a purple nose?

7. Bring Back Barbie
Remember what you and your sister loved to play with when you were really little? Well, do it again! So what if you’re in high school? You can still play Barbie city!

8. Karaoke Night
Have you and your sister always wanted to form the newest Christian singing group? Now’s your chance to practice. Put in your favorite CD and grab your hairbrush (to use as a microphone, silly!) and have a blast.

9. Go for the Gold
You don’t have to wait for another Olympic Games to roll around. Have your own competition. My sisters and I have performed gymnastics during the summer games in our own backyard. With only three competitors, it’s not hard to win a medal!

10. Be a Good Sport
Pick an activity that you and your sister enjoy — maybe tennis, basketball, racquetball or volleyball. Do it together, and it will be much more fun.

11. Free Shopping Spree
Without buying anything, go to a department store and try on ridiculous clothes. Weird prom dresses are fun! Take a camera into the dressing room, and turn it into your own photo shoot.

12. Two Thumbs Up
Go to the movies! Pick one that you both want to see and get good seats. You can even share a bag of your favorite candy.

13. Swap Shirts
Trade clothes for a day! Shop through your sister’s closet, and let her look through yours. If you agree to swap, it’s amazing how much fun it can be!

14. An Award-Winning Performance
You and your sister could be stars in your next home video. Include your mom or dad as the camera operator. This home movie will keep you laughing for years to come!

15. Sister of the Bride
So you might not marry for another 10 years, but it’s never too early to dream! Brainstorm wedding dress and ceremony ideas with your sister over a bowl of popcorn. Write down good ideas for future reference.

16. Gourmet Goulash
Join your sister in making a nice appreciation dinner for your parents. As you grow close to your sister, you may even realize just how cool your parents are! So show them your gratitude.

17. Number One Fan
Attend your sister’s sport, musical or art events. Don’t just go and hide behind your mom. Make a sign that says, "Go, (your sister’s name here)," and cheer for her loudly throughout the entire event.

18. Be a Secret Sister
Write little encouragement notes to your sister, and post them where she’ll see them. Her pillow or the bathroom mirror would work great. Secret messages are a fun way to make her smile.

19. Serving Sisters
Volunteer to cook at a soup kitchen or to ring a Salvation Army bell during the holidays. This creates an opportunity to spend time with your sister as you serve God together.

20. Say a Little Prayer for Her
When you and your sister have prayer concerns, what better activity to engage in than one that invites Jesus along? Pray for the needs on your heart and your relationship. God will do neat things if you let Him!

Go ahead; begin to cultivate a friendship with your sister. I guarantee that there will be many times you’ll want her close by. Begin now to get to know your sister and love her as God loves you. A sister can be a joy!
