The Cafeteria Lady — God Bless the Cafeteria Worker

As another school year draws to a close, it’s a good time to turn our attention to one of the unsung heroes of the school system. This person works hard and tirelessly day in and day out, but is all too often taken for granted. Male or female, married or single, young or old, our Person of the Hour always puts the students first. Content to stay in the background, this person faithfully goes about his or her day with little or no recognition. Yet he or she remains faithful and true.

Who is it? Who is this unsung hero of America? Who else? The cafeteria men and women all across this great land!

In the hundreds and hundreds of letters that I’ve received from Brio readers inviting me to come to their schools to sample their cafeteria food, most of them have said the same thing. They LOVE their cafeteria workers! They say they’re kind and friendly, they truly care about the students, they’re someone they can talk to, and they’re FUN! So here’s to all the cafeteria workers across America. We salute you!

Tribute to Cafeteria Workers
For faithfully showing up to work every morning through the wind, snow, sleet, heat and meteor showers, we salute you!

For all the sacrifices you make, like resisting the temptation to sample all the brownies before the lunch bell rings, we salute you!

For your daring spirit to try new menu items like Beef Custard Surprise and Beet Soup, we salute you!

For your kind and gentle spirit, even in the midst of our thoughtless criticism of your Beef Custard Surprise, we salute you!

For always being there for us whenever we need to talk about school, life or whatever problems we might have. You’ve listened, you’ve offered advice, and most importantly, you’ve cared. For the sacrificial giving of your time and love, we salute you!

For your sense of fun and all those times when you’ve tried to add a little holiday spirit to the menu (heart-shaped mini-meatloafs for Valentine’s Day, green roast beef for St. Patrick’s Day, turkey pudding for Thanksgiving, candy cane soup for Christmas), we salute you!

For always putting the students’ health and safety first (even the green roast beef was no exception), we salute you!

For your patience during those times when we crowded around the service window, looking more like an unruly mob than orderly lines, and you never once lost your cool, we salute you!

For not serving fish muffins, we salute you!

For all your hard work and dedication. We know it hasn’t been easy to do everything you do with little or no thanks, but we want you to know we’ve noticed, and WE SALUTE YOU!!
